"We just caught a recent episode Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel and were surprised to learn that in schools all across America various Principals and gym teachers are changing physical education the way we remember it. Games like dodgeball, jump rope and tag which may cause kids to get hurt are being removed for safer games - like playing tag by stepping on someones shadow, not touching them and jumping rope without the actual rope, just moving your hands like a crazy person. Taking it one step further other gym teachers are removing all games that require competition, so the kids can never be “winners” or “losers” again. Sounds like fun………

I think it's a result of all the over-protective, irrational, and generally dumb parents that will sue the school, the teacher, or whomever if their little Johnny got hurt.
They're trying to save themselves.
I've never been a big fan of dodgeball for kids though. I think in the wrong hands it can promote some ugly behavior. That being said, if someone with half of a brain stem actually took responsibility for teaching the kids how to play any game without singling someone out, without bullying, etc, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a game that didn't work.
At the child care where I supervise, we play Castle Wars. It's a nice alternative to dodgeball and the only difference is is that instead of throwing the balls at people, the kids are throwing them at these hula hoops structures that can easily fall if touched. If they knock down all the other team's castles before the other team can build them again, they win.
So, all in all, I don't like the fact that they're doing it and I don't think it does a good job of what people think it's supposed to do.
I agree with you Steve. It has to be handled right. My second summer when I was the Sports Coordinator at camp, I decided to try dodge ball with the yellow Verb balls on the new caged in basketball court. It was the perfect set up. All the kids loved it. Even the kids who hated everything else we did. We probably could have played that game all day everyday and they wouldn't have cared. Kids got hurt every once in a while, but they would always get up and shake it off because they knew if they went to the terribly mean Fun Police(Kit) then that would have put the kibosh on that game. That's how much they loved it. It was awesome. Plus I think I did a good job separating them into fair teams and explaining the rules and regulations down to a T. For the obvious reason that I am in fact, the man.
And Matt, once the draft is over I will probably do one. I slept in a little late today so I missed the first part of Rnd. 3, whici is still real important. Once I see all of their picks, I'll let you know my opinions.
